League’s Worlds 2021 Relocated to Europe
Just a few months after announcing that this year’s LoL World Championship will take place in China, RIOT Games have decided to relocate the event to Europe. The company believes that it will allow more players to participate in the event.
Riot’s Global Head of Esports John Needham released a video statement, in which he explains the reasoning behind the decision. While the company is happy with how the last year’s championship was held in China. However, due to the worldwide increase in Delta COVID-19 cases, this year travel restrictions have become even more complicated. Consequently, the company became unable to guarantee that the qualified teams will be able to travel to China with full rosters. For this reason, the event has been relocated to Europe.
After considering multiple options, the company has decided that Europe is the most accessible region for most teams. Currently RIOT Games are not ready to reveal where exactly the event will take place, as well as its dates. More details on the tournament are expected to be revealed “in the days and weeks ahead”.
Earlier in June RIOT Games revealed the plans to host Worlds 2021 in five Chinese cities – Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. Each city was supposed to host on of the stages of the tournament.
